Sociology

AS / A2 Sociology

Sociology is a fascinating and enlightening subject which heightens our awareness of an increasingly complex and ever changing society. Many sociologists believe society is the major influence on our behaviour, in shaping our attitudes, beliefs and morals. Sociologists offer explanations for various social phenomena.

  • Why do people break the law?
  • Why does poverty exist in advanced industrial societies?
  • Why does Britain have one of the highest divorce rates in Western Europe?

Sociology allows you to explore the range of explanations offered by sociologists and provides an opportunity to discuss and debate major issues.

AS

The AS course lasts one year and consists of two units:

  • Families and households (January exam)
  • Education and research methods (Summer exam)

There is no coursework element.

The AS qualification represents the first half of a full A level but may be used as a stand alone qualification.

A2

The A2 is more demanding and also consists of two units:

  • Beliefs and Society
  • Crime and deviance plus theory and research methods

Subject Combinations

Sociology combines well with subjects such as Psychology, Law, History, Geography, English and Media Studies.

The Next Step

Sociology is a useful subject for a growing number of careers, especially those which are ‘people orientated’, e.g. social work, teaching, the health service, law, police force, probation or prison service, personnel management, public relations, journalism and marketing.
