Physics
AS / A2 Physics
Physics is the most basic of all the sciences. It is the science of nature and seeks to understand the laws and properties of matter and the forces acting upon it.
A Level Physics is strongly recommended for students intending to study any branch of engineering or physical science at university and is desirable for those considering careers in medicine, dentistry or any other branch of science.
AS
Three modules taken and assessed in year 1:
- Mechanics
- Electrons, Waves and Photons
- Practical Skills in Physics 1
A2
Three modules taken and assessed in year 2:
- The Newtonian World
- Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics
- Practical Skills in Physics 2
Assessment
The first two units each year are externally marked and the third one is centre assessed. Students take the first exam in January and the second in the summer.
Entry Requirements
The Mathematical skills required for A level Physics are reinforced by work done in A level Maths and students are expected to have at least grade B in Higher Level GCSE Maths prior to starting the Physics course, unless they are also taking AS Mathematics.
AS and A2 Physics has higher mathematical demands than GCSE sciences and greater precision is required when answering exam questions. It is necessary for students to spend several hours per week outside lessons completing and consolidating the work.
Subject Combinations
After Mathematics, the most common subjects to be taken with Physics include Chemistry, Design Technology, Biology and Computing.
The Next Step
Nearly all students who complete the A level Physics course go on to enter higher education. Engineering is the largest destination followed by science degrees. Other students embark on a wide range of courses from accountancy to philosophy.
