AS / A2 Mathematics
Are you good at mathematics? Do you enjoy mathematics? Have you achieved, or expect to achieve, at least a grade B at Higher Tier GCSE?
Hartlepool Sixth Form College offers a choice of courses in Mathematics at AS and A-level. No one has failed A-level mathematics in the last six years!
In your first year of study you will study AS Mathematics. You will take three modules, comprising of two core modules and an applied module. The core modules take what you have learnt at GCSE and extend it a little further together with introducing topics which will be new to you. The applied module will be one of:
- Probability and Statistics which is about the understanding, analysis and interpretation of data. This module is particularly useful for students studying Biology, Geography and Psychology.
- Mechanics which is the study of the forces on a body and its subsequent motion or equilibrium. This module is particularly useful for students studying Physics.
- Discrete Mathematics which looks at the analysis of networks using algorithms. This module is particularly useful for students studying Business and Computing.
If you wish to upgrade your AS qualification into an A-level then three more modules are studied in the second year, two more core and one more applied module.
Don’t forget if you are good at Mathematics, why not consider also studying Further Mathematics?
If you need any further information on the courses we offer then please talk to us when we visit your school, or at any of the Open Evenings or just make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you.
This is what one student – Josh – had to say:
"I left High Tunstall in 2007. I had decided before the end of year 11 that I was going to Hartlepool Sixth Form College when I finished secondary school. We had lots of introductions from the staff in the maths department at Brinkburn, in assemblies and in one to one interviews. In year 11 at High Tunstall, I studied a free standing maths in my free time. The course covered a large amount of material that is also studied in core 1 maths at AS level, and also some of the material from core 2. The course was interesting and I found that it further enhanced my GCSE maths grade, allowing me to get an A* with less revision than I would have needed to do without the FSMQ. It also gave me a sure footing when moving on to AS level, leading to me achieving an overall ‘A’. At college, I spent my free time in the maths department. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. I think that taking maths at Brinkburn after taking the FSMQ was a very good decision, both from an academic point of view and because it led to me making new friends and also boosted my attainment in other subjects."
