Health and Social Care

BTEC National Diploma / Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

The BTEC National qualifications in Health and Social Care are courses designed for those students who are interested in progressing into either Higher Education or work within the Health and Social Care professions. These qualifications can be taken as an equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 A levels depending upon your career options.

The varied programme of study takes place over a two year period, enabling the learner to develop a range of skills, techniques and personal attributes which are essential tools for the Health and Social Care practitioner.

Practical Experience

A compulsory element of the Diploma and Extended Diploma qualifications include a minimum of 100 hours practical experience in a variety of Health and Social Care settings which acts as a focal point for learning and provides experience of the various sectors.

Throughout the course tutors will arrange a number of guest speakers and specialist activities.

Assessment

The course is assessed through both coursework and successful completion of practical activities.

Progression

Health and Social Care students progress to University to follow a variety of courses including Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition and Radiography. Other students have chosen the Diploma route into Nursing while some go directly into employment working as Health Care Assistants and Hospital Technicians.

Possible Restrictions On Entry To The Course

A security check by the Criminal Records Bureau will be necessary for volunteers, candidates in placement and employees working in this vocational area. This will be completed by the College on enrolment.

You should not underestimate the demands of the BTEC programme. You will have to complete both academic and practical work at level 3. You should have a sensible and mature attitude to both work and study and be prepared to make a considerable commitment of time and effort during your course.

Additional Training

  • Food Hygiene
