Film Studies
AS / A2 Film Studies
Choose film studies because you will get the opportunity to view and analyse a wide variety of film genres and styles that include mainstream Hollywood, British and World cinema. You will learn how films communicate meaning to an audience, do some research into the major film companies, pleasures and expectations as an audience member. You can exercise your creative skills by writing a script designing a storyboard and producing a short film.
Occasionally there will be opportunities throughout the course to attend cinemas and I-max screenings (in Bradford) for subject-related viewings and seminars.Assessment
You will take two units per year over two years.
The AS units include:
FM 1: Exploring film form: This unit is assessed by a coursework portfolio, there is an option that allows you to make your own film.
FM 2: British and American film: This unit examines your knowledge on both Hollywood and British film industries. You will examine studios, genres, stars, audience consumption among other film issues.
The A2 units include:
FM 3: Film Research & Creative Projects: this unit requires students to develop research skills and produce to investigate a particular genre, auteur or star/performer. This unit allows students to design/create a short film.
FM 4: Varieties of film – this involves students analysing a variety of different national cinemas and international film styles.
Subject Combinations
Film studies complements a broad range of other subjects including the popular choices of media studies, literature and business studies.
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements are five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language.
The Next Step
With a qualification in film studies you can progress to undergraduate courses in film, media, visual culture and humanities using the critical and analytical and research skills that you will develop on the course. Many students pursue careers in media production.
