ILEX Level 3 Professional Higher Diploma in Law
What Does The Course Involve?
The Ilex level 3 Professional Diploma in law and Practice is the first stage in academic qualifications needed to become a Legal executive lawyer and is assessed to A level standard. If you work in a law firm when you have completed this course your employer, on a court assessment of costs, can charge out your fee earning time on the level D litigation assistant fee scale which is currently up to £136 per hour in London and £116 nationally.
Ilex level 3 studied in one academic year comprises of five modules in order to obtain a certificate in law and practice. These are studied on a part time basis on Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week throughout the academic year. Students will study Unit one and compulsory papers unit 16 & 17 with one law paper and a linked practice paper of their choice for example criminal law with criminal litigation practice. In the second year of study the student will study one further law paper with a linked practice paper and the compulsory law papers for the professional diploma in law and practice. Through ILEX courses it is possible for many people to become a Legal Executive: such as legal support staff, mature students, school leavers, those looking for a new career or returning to work/ education after a break.
Legal Executives are qualified, experienced lawyers specialising in a particular area of law. They have their own recognised status and role within the legal profession and benefit from a responsible and rewarding career.

What Can I Do With This Qualification?
Further study: In the third and fourth year of study on successful completion of the Ilex Level 3 modules the student can progress to level 6. On completion of the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma combined with the appropriate qualifying work experience, students qualify as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives. (i.e a Legal Executive).From the position of a Legal Executive further progression is possible by ultimately qualifying as a Solicitor by taking the Legal Practice Examinations.

What Qualifications Do I Need?
You will ideally need to have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or otherwise some experience of working in practice.
Resources
You provide: Textbooks - specifically written textbooks or study manuals are available from ILEX- 1 study manual per module is essential. £21 each manual available from ilex direct.
Assessment
The course is assessed by way of unseen examinations for each module. The pass mark is between 40% and 50% depending on law or practice papers.
Cost
The tuition fees for 2011/12 for level 3 are as follows:
Unit 16 Client Care Compulsory module is £230.
Unit 17 Legal Research Compulsory module £180.
Law Papers are £270 each.
Practice papers are £295 each.
These modules are flexible and therefore you only pay for the modules you choose to study that particular year.
In addition to that you will need to register with the Institute of Legal Executives and pay examination fees.
