Drama and Theatre Studies

Choose Drama and Theatre Studies A level if you are passionate about theatre and want to perform and learn about the background of plays and playwrights.

You will have the opportunity to:

• Develop a sound understanding of drama theory and critical response to live theatre performance.

• Develop skills in a range of practical drama elements with a choice from acting, directing, costume, set, mask and technical design.

• Choose your own areas of interest for research into an influential director, designer, theatre company or other practitioner.

• Work in groups on practical performance as an actor, designer or director.

You will study two units as part of your AS qualification:

Unit 1 –Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play

60% of AS - 1 hour 30 minutes written examination
100 marks

Section A – response to live theatre seen during the course

Section B – study of one set play from a choice of six.

Unit 2 – Presentation of an Extract from a Play

Practical performance - 80 marks

Performance in a group of an extract from a published play. You need to be willing to practise regularly, review your progress and accept feedback on the quality of your work, you will learn to co-operate with others and adopt working methods that are consistent with the health and safety of all concerned. The course works well teamed with English, Art, History, Law, Business Studies, Culture and Communication.

You could progress to a higher education course in performing arts, drama, technical theatre, entertainment design, event management or a host of other subjects. This course will prepare you for the level of independent study needed at HE level.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

It is preferred that you have a grade C or above in GCSE Drama, Dance, Music, Expressive Arts or Art, or similar qualification. Students who have not taken these subjects at GCSE will be accepted through interview only.

Students considering this course should have an interest in performing arts and must understand that because of the work involved in the programme attendance is absolutely essential.

Rehearsals will take place out of normal college hours on a regular basis.
