Art and Design
AS / A2 Art and Design (Fine Art)
This Course provides opportunities for a wide range of creative and intellectual experiences suited to those intent upon a professional career in the field of Art and Design, and also offers an essential stimulus and breadth to those who seek a more general education. The content of the course is broad covering a range of activities including print making, graphics, textiles and 3D ceramics. There is however a strong emphasis on painting and drawing throughout the course. The syllabus breaks the course up into 4 units:
- Unit 1 Art & Design Coursework
- Unit 2 Externally Set Assignment
- Unit 3 Art & Design Coursework
- Unit 4 Externally Set Assignment.
* Units 1and 2 make up the AS Award
** Units 3 and 4 make up A2
Assessment
For both AS and A2 there will be 1 course work unit and 1 terminal test.
One of the course work units in both AS and A2 involves a personal study/research into historical, contextual and cultural aspects of Art and Design. The Terminal Tests are 8 hours for AS and 12 hours for A2.
In each unit the work is internally marked and externally moderated.
Entrance: Students will normally be expected to have studied art at GCSE although beginners with some natural ability and an enthusiasm for practical and creative work would be considered.
The Next Step
Many students continue their creative studies after completing their ‘A’ level courses usually via an approved Foundation Course. In recent years Fine Art, Graphic Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Fashion Marketing, Photography, Film and Video Studies have proved to be popular specialisms at degree level leading to exciting and rewarding employment in all areas of Industry.
